Borssele, the best spot to learn
Just over the border from the Netherlands, only 1 hour from Brussels, lies the spot of Borssele, one of the most emblematic and flat spots in the Benelux. An open spot with clean and clear beaches away from mass tourism, due to the fact that it is close to the entrance of a commercial port. A place that is very compatible with all levels of kitesurfers. The navigation is done in a very wide inlet that protects us from the rough swell of the sea shore. The stable wind, preferably from the west to the south, is ideal for progressing with confidence. Learning to kite on flat water and with a footing speeds up your progress as you have an easier time getting back on the board and you save yourself physically by not having to battle with the waves. Although to become a good kiteboarder you need to be familiar with all sea conditions, at KiteTrek we still advocate for a progressive learning curve to ensure a constant and less random evolution.
Positive points :
- Proximity of the site
- Very good weather conditions (wind direction, flat water)
- Beginner to advanced level
- Free parking
Negative points :
- Industrial landscape (wind turbines, power station)
- No public transport (carpooling possible, contact us)
Knokke/Cadzand-Bad, the best place to stay by the sea
Between Belgium and the Netherlands, 1h30 from Brussels. The spot of Knokke/Cadzand-Bad has a view on the natural park of the Zwin. It is an interesting place for the in-between seasons because it is less crowded. Moreover, it offers accommodation facilities if we wish to stay there or to keep our companions busy. The spot is surrounded by hotels, campsites, Airbnb accommodation and catering facilities. It is also a very compatible place for all levels of kitesurfers. The wind is favourable, from the West to the N-North-East, and sailing is best done at descendant tide to favour calmer seas, as it is also a spot that is subject to waves and current. But when the navigation conditions are ideal, this spot can offer us pleasant sessions and also good after-sessions.
Positive points :
- Proximity of the site
- Landscapes of the Natural Park
- Beginner to advanced level
- Accommodations (accommodation, restaurants and/or other activities)
- Accessible by public transport (carpooling possible, contact us)
Negative points :
- Pay parking
- Waves and current
Maasvlakte Slufter/Oostvoorne
The Maasvlakt Slufter/Oostvoorne spot is the Eldorado of kitesurfing spots in the Benelux, “the California of the Netherlands”. It is located 1h40 from Brussels and is the furthest selection on our list, but well worth a visit.
Slufter is a spot made up of sandbanks, mini lagoons, a “Californian” beach as far as the eye can see. The wind is favourable from south to north. It is also a more technical spot because of the swell, but with a favourable current (i.e. against the wind) and at high tide, it is compatible with all levels of kitesurfers.
Oostvoorne is the flattest spot in the Netherlands and also the best spot to learn. Its reputation for kitesurfing is lacking because of the crowds in summer and because to get there you have to walk 15 minutes through a nature reserve. There are worse things after all.
Open areas with clean beaches and beautiful scenery as far as the eye can see.
Positives points :
- Spot conditions
- Beginner to Advanced level
- Scenery
- Free parking
Negative points :
- Distance
- No public transport (carpooling possible, contact us)
- Access to the spot (15 min walk)
